Gurbet Tekin: Abdullah Öcalan plays a vital role in freedom for women

Gurbet Tekin

Gurbet Tekin Co-chaired of Stewr Council (Merdin functions) in an interview with Newroz TV:

I have 10 children, and five of them are in the freedom struggle for Kurdistan. One of them has also became a martyr.

Due to pressure from the Turkish government, as well as politics of torture, imprisonment and widespread massacre of the Kurdish people, I stirred up the city of Merdin. Soon after, I moved to Istanbul from Merdin to continue the collective agitation.

Consequently, I was thrown in jail for a year and a number of charges were raised against me including participation in political activism. I then joined the Kurdish liberation movement, led by Leader APO (Abdullah Öcalan).

After the establishment of the co-chair system by the Leader APO, I was elected as the mayor of Merdin Province. We created the Peace Mothers organization that serves as a bridge in bringing Kurdish and Turkish mothers together, because as mothers we share a common pain in this war.

We women are victims of violence, and did not want this war. Leader Öcalan plays a vital role in freedom for women and changing the patriarchal mentality in Kurdistan, and the Middle East as well. He believes that “society will be free when women gain freedom”.

As a result, we have created an economic system so as to establish cooperative programs in our cities and villages. The cooperative system distributes to the agricultural products based on the needs of cities and villages in that region.

We call all women and young people to return to their homeland. There is much necessary work that must be done together.
