PYD boycotts constitution referendum in Syria

PYD_logoWEST KURDISTAN, — Giving information to ANF about PYD’s (Democratic Union Party) diplomatic talks with Russia and Iran, PYD President Saleh Muhammad who is fighting for ‘Democratic Autonomy and constitutional security for the rights of Kurds’ in Syria said PYD will boycott the constitutional referendum and commented Syrian National Council’s promise of ‘autonomy’ for Kurds as a groundless statement.

The Bashar Al Assad regime continues to survive while trying to bloodily suppress the uprisings in Syria which started in the March of 2011 after the downfall of Tunisia and Egyptian regimes.

While the uprisings in the country after some time turned into armed conflicts under the name of “Free Syrian Army” with the support of western forces, the Assad regime has tried to survive basing on the regional benefits of Russia and Iran in particular. Despite all uprisings and international pressures, the Assad regime has still not taken a critical step for a real democratization.

At a most recent conference in Tunisia on 24 February which was attended by representatives from more than 60 Western and Arab countries, the West-supported Syrian National Council which had avoided to voice the Kurdish problem so far has promised ‘autonomy’ for Kurds.

In the final declaration of the conference, 60 countries urged Syria to urgently end violence to allow for humanitarian assistance into the country , while “Friends of Syria” group expressed they considered the Syrian National Council as ‘a legitimate representative of Syrians in quest of a peaceful democratic change’.

The declaration of the meeting remarked that the opposition would be provided with effective support and underlined that a political solution was needed for the current crisis in the country.

Pointing out that the Coordination Committee Vice President’s autonomy’ promise for Kurds was a groundless agreement reached without consulting any other authorities, PYD President Saleh Muhammad underlined that Kurds will not believe or trust in baseless promises.

Reminding of the protocol signed by Kurdish parties as a result of meetings held between Kurdish People’s Assembly and National Kurdish Council, Muhammad noted that works have started for establishing a main committee and sub-committees in all cities for ensuring a unity to avoid conflicts among Kurdish groups.

Referring to meetings with Russian and Iranian authorities, Muhammad said that; “We have common grounds against external interference and the armament of the opposition.”

Muhammad underlined that they demand a complete change in the present regime and notified of their decision to boycott the constitution referendum as the “new constitution doesn’t propose anything concerning Kurds”.

It is reported that the draft of the new constitution doesn’t propose a solution to the basic problems of the country, the Kurdish issue in particular.

Emphasizing that the meeting in Tunisia sided with arming the people, PYD President warned that this goal could have very dangerous consequences as bloody conflicts still continue in the country.

Muhammad also pointed out that Turkey stood behind the armed factors of Syria who camped in Turkey and reached out into Syria through Turkish intelligence officers.

PYD President also denied the Turkey-based news about “military station raids” by Kurdish protestors, noting that the Syrian regime couldn’t intervene in Kurds as it refrained from facing their opposition.

Muhammad pointed to the recent symbolic changes in the names of cities and villages into Kurdish and added; “We need to be very careful in the face of the games being played. There is no return for Kurds anymore and we now need to make our achievements permanent.”
