Hunger strike staged by BDP and Block deputies

ANKARA, Turkey, — A two-day hunger strike is being launched today by deputies of Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) and Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block to support the indefinite hunger strike staged by the Kurdish jailed MPs Selma Irmak and Faysal Sariyildiz and many other political prisoners held in Turkish prisons.

The hunger strike of MPs was staged to protest against the ongoing military and political operations and the strict isolation of Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan.

The deputies’ hunger strike takes place in the BDP headquarter in Ankara, in a hall covered with banners writing “We want negotiations, not war and freedom, not isolation”.

“With a hope that these acts will pave the way for the solution, we once again state here that we will decisively continue our struggle for freedom and peace. It is beyond any doubt that democratic resistance and democratic opposition will rise and grow in the face of increasing pressures,” said Gulten Kişanak BDP Co-Chair.

Kişanak pointed to the isolation of Ocalan remarking that it makes the process more dangerous as Ocalan is a significant actor in respect to the solution of the Kurdish problem.

The hunger strike of the deputies will end at 18.00 on 21 February.
