Hunger strike for Ocalan launched in various cities

NEWSDESK, — To protest against the capture and the isolation of Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan, hunger strikes have been launched in various cities across North Kurdistan and Turkey.

Dozens of Kurdish people, including Nazmi Gur the Wan MP of BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) and Mihriban Shah the BDP Wan Branch Co-Chair took their turn in the hunger strike in Başkale (Wan) on Friday. “I hope that 2012 will be a year of democracy and peace,” Gur said.

The hunger strike is reported to continue with turns until Newroz (Kurdish New Year) celebrations on March 19.

Twelve Kurds staged a three-day hunger strike in the BDP Zeytinburnu Branch building in Istanbul on Thursday night as eleven others ended their three-day hunger strike on Friday in the BDP Başakşehir Branch building with the participation of BDP Istanbul Co-Chair Ali Riza Bilgili.

“No matter the price will be, we will continue the struggle for the freedom of Ocalan with determination. We condemn the conspiracy of February 15 against our leader,” said Emine Ondul on behalf of the group.
