In the Mountains of Resistance: PJAK’s Revolutionary Struggle for Democracy and Women’s Liberation in Iran

In an exclusive report from the mountainous bases of PJAK, the French news network LCI examined the views of members and commanders of this Kurdish party regarding their struggle against the Iranian regime.

In this interview, Amir Karimi, co-chair of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), emphasised that their struggle is not only military but also a revolutionary movement centred on women’s liberation and real democracy in Iran.

In a field documentary titled With the Opponents of the Mullahs’ Regime in the Mountains of Iranian Kurdistan, LCI journalists traversed the difficult mountain paths along the border regions of Başûr and Rojhelat Kurdistan to reach PJAK’s bases and interview party members.

The French news report presents a blend of images and narratives from fighters, many of whom are young and educated. Some female members of PJAK share their personal experiences and motivations for joining the resistance.

In the interview, Amir Karimi, PJAK’s co-chair, says, “The struggle against the Islamic Republic does not only take place in Tehran or on media platforms; in the mountains, where ideology, education, and resistance are intertwined, it finds its true meaning.” He highlights the prominent role of women in the party’s structure and emphasises the concept of a “women-centred revolution,” considering it the cornerstone of transformation in Iran.

The visual report also notes that PJAK is committed to a political and social project aimed at transitioning away from Iran’s current religious-authoritarian regime. Key concepts in the narratives of the party’s members include a focus on self-governance, gender equality, and direct democracy.
