Kalkan: Time to Build National Unity

The Middle East Crisis and the Path to Democratic Unity

During a recent appearance on Medya Haber TV, Duran Kalkan, a member of the Abdullah Öcalan Academy of Social Sciences, delivered an in-depth analysis.

The global capitalist system is using Israel as a strike force to reshape the Middle East in line with supranational interests, primarily the establishment of energy corridors and geopolitical control. Backed by the U.S., the U.K., NATO, and much of Europe, this strategy reflects a broader agenda: to dismantle regional resistance and impose compliance. Iran, under pressure to surrender, failed to anticipate or prevent this crisis. Internal resilience could have been created through democratic reforms, but instead, the regime clung to repression, especially towards women and young people demanding basic freedoms under the banner ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom).

Iran had the cultural and historical foundation for democratisation but squandered the opportunity. Instead, extremist nationalism, religious authoritarianism and rigid governance have led to isolation. Alternative paths were available. Abdullah Öcalan proposed a democratic model rooted in pluralism and coexistence, referencing the Medina Charter. However, Iran ignored it.

Now, the system is geared towards regime change. This could have been avoided. True security for Iran, Israel or any other nation cannot be achieved through domination. Israel’s current strategy mirrors Iran’s: to crush any opposition in order to secure itself. But freedom is mutual. For one people to be free, their neighbours must also be free.

The only lasting solution lies in a democratic union of the Middle East. Socialist ideals, many of which were developed by Jewish intellectuals, teach us that no society can be free if it oppresses others. While military victories may serve trade interests, they won’t bring real peace or security.

The Kurdish Role and the Call for Unity

Of all the peoples, the Kurds — especially in Rojhelat (Eastern Kurdistan) — have demonstrated the most consistent democratic principles. They have resisted repression while prioritising peaceful and political paths to change. Their demand is simple: a free and democratic life.

This is a historic moment. All Kurdish movements must work together to build national unity. Now is the time for the Kurdistan National Congress. PJAK’s recent call for unity is both timely and necessary. Kurdish organisations across all regions must respond by putting aside personal or political divisions to form a collective front for democratic change.

For the people of Rojhelat

The situation is dangerous and unpredictable. They must stay organised and alert and prioritise their own security through community solidarity. They must avoid being drawn into destructive conflict. Instead, focus on building a democratic union of Iran that includes all peoples and promotes joint governance.

The Kurdish people, from across all parts of Kurdistan and the diaspora, stand with Rojhelat. Have faith in this unity. A democratic future is possible, but only through collective action, self-belief, and a commitment to peace and freedom.
