A Turkish military killed in clashes

HAKKARI, North Kurdistan, — One Turkish soldier was killed in Hakkari as a result of clashes between the Kurdish guerrillas of the PKK and the Turkish army, report said today.

Seven Kurdish guerrillas were killed during an operation of Turkish army in Dersim on 26th April. The HPG (People’s Defense Forces) released the names of these guerrillas on Monday.

The PKK is in a self-defense position after calling off on 1st March 2011 the unilateral ceasefire declared on 13th August 2010. The PKK called off the ceasefire but maintained a non-attack position, which means they will not attack unless they are attacked.

In its statement on 1st March the Kurdistan’s Community Unions (KCK) blamed AKP government’s negative policy against Kurdish people. KCK said the guerrillas may now attack the Turkish army but stay in a self-defense position. “Our guerrilla units will follow an active-defense strategy” the statement read.

Active-defence strategy means the Kurdish guerrillas only target Turkish military if they prepare to attack the guerrilla’s positions.

KCK blamed Turkish government on the failure of the peace process and said that Turkish side continued military operations against the Kurdish guerrillas and its campaign against the Kurdish politicians.
