Iran: repercussions on Iran’s nuclear program and Lausanne agreement

Iran’s nuclear program and Lausanne agreement

Ahmad Khatami, Tehran’s Friday Imam speaker, warned the Iranian diplomats on the negotiations team to be careful of the proposals put forth and to ensure that terms are made to the benefit of Iran. In addition, other Iranian government officials have warned the negotiations team to make the terms clear and transparent.

Critics of the Lausanne Agreement in Iran are unhappy with the timeframes proposed for the removal of sanctions on Iran as well as the uranium enrichment program. Senior officials also questioned the diplomats in regards to unknown details in the Agreement. Ali Akbar Salehi, the senior most official on the negotiations team has stated that the results of the Lausanne negotiations with the P5+1 group are ready to be announced as soon as Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif is satisfied with the terms.

Ahmad Khatami referred to a speech by Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, when stating that the Iranian diplomats in Lausanne have no power to negotiate in regards to Iran’s military. Thus, they can only make deals in regards to the nuclear program. Khatami also stated that if the US wished to negotiate on other matters, then the first meeting would be an experience for the team and a decision can subsequently be made whether to allow such future meetings.

In regards to this, Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani stated last Tuesday that known critics in Iran have become a voice in unison with Benjamin Netanyahu, the President of Israel.

A member of the Leadership Council of the Free and Democratic Society of Eastern Kurdistan (KODAR), Fuad Bêrîtan commented that Iran is trying to use the nuclear program for their benefit but that the chances of success are low. Fuad Bêrîtan continued that the best way for Iran to solve their issues and to end the conflict is to come up with a democratic system in Iran. This will prevent the spreading of issues from neighbouring countries to Iran. Iran needs to change the system from its very foundations and give rights to all peoples in Iran hence ending the need for any conflict. The Lausanne Agreement only serves Iran’s interests as a public relations scheme. It does not solve society’s ills. Iran needs to focus on domestic problems, aiming to solve ethnic issues like the Kurdish Question.
