After much uncertainty and doubts about the status of six Kurdish political prisoner on death row named Saman Nasim, Sirwan Najawi, Ibrahim Issapour, Younes Aghaiyan, Ali Afshari and his brother Habib Afshari, European Kurdish and international human rights organizations continued to protest the treatment of these prisoners by the Iranian regime and demanded an immediate stop to their executions.
According to the most recent report from the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN), the prisoners were supposed to be executed on Wednesday the 18th of February. In some of the prisoner’s cases even the families and next of kin were contacted to collect the prisoner’s belongings. However, the executions were halted and the whereabouts of the prisoners remained uncertain. There is also the strong possibility that the prisoners have been executed in secret.
On Tuesday the European Union (EU) and the Committee for Human Rights of Federal Republic of Germany, asked the Iranian government to stop the execution of the political prisoner Saman Nasim. In a video message Amnesty International placed the future and security of Saman Nasim solely on the shoulders of Ali Khamenei.
Due to the immense international concern for the well-being of the prisoners a collection of Kurdish human rights, women’s groups and political representatives including PJAK in Stockholm, the Community of Kurdish Mothers in Stockholm, the Zagros Youth Organization and a number of other Kurdish and Iranian civil organizations participated in a demonstration in front of the Foreign Ministry of Sweden in Stockholm. The participants strongly condemned the Iranian regime’s policy of executing Kurdish political activists. The protesters demanded that the Swedish government act immediately to prevent the imminent executions.
The Kurdish Zagros Youth Organization made a particular plea against the execution of Saman Nasim. The imminent execution of Saman Nasim, according to the Zagros Youth Organization is seen as a ruthless tactic used by the Iranian regime against young Kurdish political activists. The organization urged all Kurdish youth and all other human rights groups and organizations to place immediate pressure on the Iranian regime to cancel its decision immediately.
