On the 22nd of December, eight ordinary prisoners in Mehabad committed suicide in protest of the prison authorities’ abuse.

According to the Campaign in Defense of Civil and Political Prisoners, 8 prisoners have attempted suicide protesting the refusal of permission to see their family, lack of medical care and not seeing a doctor or not being taken to the hospital by the Mehabad Prison officials.

As a result of medical negligence and getting them to the hospital late, two of the prisoners lost their lives. They said the unnatural condition and terms in prison and the authorities tyrannical ruling and attitude toward prisoners was the main reason for the prisoner’s action in prison of Mehabad.

A source familiar with the situation in the prison said to the campaign: “the prisoners have attempted to committ suicide by taking pills.”

Diler Salimi is from the city of Serdesht and Morteza Ghasemi is from Kermanshah. They are two of the protesting prisoners, before reaching the hospital that have lost their lives.

The source also added that “six other prisoners in the hospital, after gastric lavage, were saved from death.”

Exhausting pressure, inhumane conditions and injustice ruling by the authorities in prison also in other prisons in Iran have been suggested as the main reasons of the prisoner’s dissatisfaction and in some cases leading to suicidal inmates.

Lack of medicine and medical care in prisons, also lack of timely medical care and transportation to medical centre have been reported as the most common cause of increased loss of prisoners live.
