Ahwazi activists close to the family of the two prisoners, Ali Chebieshat and Sayed Khaled Mousawi were executed secretly in solitary confinement on around on 22 May. They said that following their execution, the men’s bodies were not returned to their families.
On November 16, 2013, the two prisoners appeared on the Press TV, “confessing” participation in the Chogha Zanbil pipeline bombing .Apart from these forced “confessions”, there is no evidence in relation to the explosion of the Chogha Zanbil natural gas pipeline. Indeed, the authorities initially declared that the explosion was an accident. Nonetheless, on 9 September 2013, Judge Sayed Mohammed Baqir Mousavi of the Second Branch of the Ahwaz Revolutionary Court convicted the men of moharebeh and sentenced Mr. Chebieshat and Mr. Mousavi to execution. Finally, their death penalty sentences have been confirmed by the Supreme Court during last month.
Torture and other ill-treatment of detainees is commonplace in Iran, often to try to force detainees to make “confessions”. Coerced “confessions”, sometimes broadcast on television even before the trial has concluded, are often accepted as evidence in Iranian courts.
