MP Dr Fattahi: There is no accurate statistic of AIDS patients in Urmiye

AIDS is one of the problems in society of Iran. Patients with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in Iran are trying to hide their illness for fear of public reaction while this only leads to increase in AIDS Statistics.

Dr Fattahi MP for Urmiye and member of the Health Commission of the Iran’s Parliament said (ISNA) Iranian Students’ News Agency: there is no exact statistic of AIDS patients in province of Urmiye due to the lack of a centre or association to help these patients.

Certainly if not done a detailed and specify plan in relation to AIDS Statistics, we will be faced with many problems in the future, Dr Fattahi underlined.

Pointing out that people with AIDS should not look into the eyes of the offender, he stated: number of the patients have been diagnosed with AIDS without their will and any fault. We must take an active forum in Iran to support these patients also increasing community awareness to recognize HIV and its consequences.

Iran’s policies on AIDS, most times has been hush HIV and prevent any information about it that which has deadly consequences on society on based experts opinion.

Earlier Iran’s health minister, Hassan Hashemi, had expressed serious concerns over a dramatic rise in the number of people with HIV in the country, complaining that the current taboo prevents patients from receiving treatment.

The Kurdish doctors Alaei brothers who were detained for 3 years in Iran for their work on HIV treatment and developing harm-reduction programs in Iran under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

According to the Guardian by, Kamiar Alaei, a Harvard University alumnus said the number of patients visiting Aids clinics and seeking treatment dropped steadily under Ahmadinejad. “What makes me worried about Iran now is not its total numbers of people with Aids, but how many people are not aware of their infection,” he told the Guardian.

Around 27,000 people in Iran are known by clinics to be living with Aids – but the real figure is estimated to be up to 100,000. Iran’s health ministry has announced a new website set up for educational purposes. http://aids.behdasht.gov.ir/
