The Swedish Metro: Kurdish women in frontline of battle

In its yesterday’s publication, the Swedish newspaper Metro published an article shedding light on the role of Kurdish women in the struggle and resistance of the Kurdish nation in Rojava (Western Kurdistan) with the headline of “Kurdish women are in the frontline of battle”.

In the article, photos of Women Defense Units (YPJ) fighters are shown in the frontline. Their interview has been published stating: “Groups of young Kurdish women in north of Syria receive military training in order to defend themselves against attacks of extremist Islamic groups. Many of them are still in the battle front. At the same time women are trying to establish a gender equal system.”

The article mentioned that a school in the suburb of Qamishlo is used as center of military training and a large number of 17 years old along older women are waiting to participate in a 15 days training. It is further stated that after the training, gun and ammunition will be handed over to the women most of whom will return to their villages and as reserved forces they will be ready to defend their village and counter attack extremists.

A military commander named as Berfin stated that they are fighting to achieve women rights in the Middle East and their aim is to establish an equal and democratic social system. Berfin said for a woman to be able to participate in YPJ ranks, she must be older than 20 years old. In special cases a number of younger women are among YPJ ranks to whom will be assigned tasks not in the frontline.

In the same article another commander named as Sozdar said that around Cewadiye (Jawadiya) Kurdish women are fighting in the frontline of battle against the terrorist rebels of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS). She also said that Kurdish guerillas have taken control of most of Kurdish villages but they have not completely destroyed the extremists.

In the article it is further stated that transport of heavy weapons via Turkey and Iraq to Syria for the extremists is raising suspicion. It mentioned that two days ago Al-Nusra front attacked the Kurdish areas with armored vehicles, cannon and mortar but attacks were crashed by Kurdish fighters.
