ANF, Strasbourg — Commissioner Stefan Füle on behalf of the European Commission, answered question at the European Parliament debate on “Dialogue for a peaceful solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey” today.

“Yesterday – said – I met with the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) delegation and I was pleased to note their positive stand with regard not only at their work for peace but also at the positive attitude they have taken. They asked me what the Commission could do to advance the rights of Kurds. I think – he continued – the Commission is already doing a few things, for example monitoring Turkey’s respect of the criteria set for countries which are in the process of enlargement. One of these criteria, is of course the respect of human rights.
Secondly we have already financed a number of project aimed at the empowering of women, rights of children, a local research on the political disappearances and mass graves”. Commissioner Füle also added that “the Commission will be ready to support, financially as well, a post conflict situation. We – he ended – support the current process of talks”.
The debate was in generally supportive of the current phase of talks between the MIT (Turkish Secret Service) and Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.
