ANF, STRASBOURG — European deputies Jürgen Klute (GUE/NGL), Richard Howitt (S&D), Alexander Lambsdorff (ADLE) and Hélène Flautre (Greens-EFA) in cooperation with the European Parliament – Kurds Friendship Group will host a meeting called “Turkey and Kurds, the “Imrali Process. The political dialogue for a peaceful solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey” today.
The meeting will be organized in the days the European Parliament will debate on “Dialogue for a peaceful solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey”, on 6 February.
Today at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (Room S2.1, 14h30 – 16h00) BDP co-chair MP Selahattin Demirtaş and BDP Chief of the BDP Foreign Affairs Department, MP Nazmi Gür, will speak at the meeting.
The Turkish Government has recently begun new negotiations with Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in order to find a political and negotiated solution to the Kurdish issue. MP Demirtaş and MP Gür will provide to MEPs and other participants the BDP assessment and perspective on the so-called “Imrali process”.
Wednesday 6th February, at 5pm, after the formal European Parliament debate on “Dialogue for a peaceful solution of the Kurdish question in Turkey” , MEPS will host a press conference with MP Demirtaş (EP Press Room in Strasbourg) so the BDP co-chair will have the opportunity to give us his assessement on the parliamentary debate.
The debate will be opened by an official statement of Commissioner Stefan Füle on behalf of the European Commission, followed by another official statement of the Irish Presidency of the EU Council. After the statements, MEPS of all E.P. Political Groups will take the floor. It’s the first time that EU institutions will present their views on the issue, and more specifically on the dialogue between the Turkish governement and Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. A delegation of the BDP Party, led by its co-chair MP Selahattin Demirtaş, will be in Strasbourg to closely follow the debate.
