BRUSSELS, Belgium, — The Kurdish National Congress (KNK) based in Brussels celebrated 15 May the Kurdish Language Celebration Day.
In a written statement the KNK’s Commission for Language and Education announced that this year’s day is dedicated to KCK detainees who have determinedly demanded to defend themselves in Kurdish language at the Turkish courts.
The KNK statement pointed out that this year’s Kurdish Language Day, which will be celebrated with the slogan “It is a national obligation to protect Kurdish for Kurds and Kurdistan”, coincides with a process of severe repressions imposed on the Kurdish nation and Kurdistan by the states of Turkey, Iran and Syria.
“The Kurdish language has not become official in these states in the midst of this sharp cycle of repression”, underlined the statement and pointed out that it is of great importance for Kurds to hold the matter of Kurdish education on the agenda in the current process of new constitution’s formation.
The Kurdish people as well as the leaders of Kurdish national movement should mobilize all their opportunities and capacities to realize education in Kurdish, added the statement and called on all Kurdish people to conduct various works for this purpose everywhere they live.
May 15, the day Kurdish literature, art and philosophy magazine Hawar started publication by linguist Celadet Ali Bedirxan and his fellows in Damascus in 1932, is celebrated as Kurdish Language Celebration Day since 2006.
