Kerkuk: Campaign to deprive Kurds of voting

kirkukKERKUK, South Kurdistan, — Arab members of parliament launched a campaign against the Kurds in Kerkuk trying to pass legislation in Iraqi Parliament to prevent the Kurds from voting, Sbeiy reports.

The prohibition on voting is demanded for all those Kurdish families whose names have been registered since 2004.

Azad Jebari a member of Kerkuk Council told Sbeiy News that “This is a new campaign by the Arabs aimed to protect their own interests and power in Kerkuk in the provincial elections.” He warned a big disadvantage for the Kurds if legislation passed.

Azad Jebari also said that the Arab PMs have collected 163 signatures in the council so far, adding that the Kurdish MPs have not reacted sufficiently.
