URFA, — To prevent the Kurdish people from celebration Newroz, Turkish police attacked hundreds of people with tear gas, water cannon and real bullets in the Viranşehir town of Urfa province. The crowd, including Amed MP Leyla Zana, keeps waiting to enter the square.
Violent police intervention also took place in Mersin in which a great number of people were arrested and demonstrators, including Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Mersin MP Ertugrul Kurkçu, were harassed by the police.
Tens of thousands clashed with the police in Batman where the police barricades were removed by demonstrators. Despite Democratic Society Congress (DTK) Co-Chairs Aysel Tugluk’s and Ahmet Turk’s efforts, the police attacked the demonstrators with tear gas. The clashes continue at the entrance of the Newroz square.
The police also attacked demonstrators in Wan, Cizre, Silopi, Idil and Hatay.
In the Nusaybin Town of Merdin, about 30 thousand demonstrators have been able to pass the police barricades and enter the celebration square.
