DIYARBAKIR, North Kurdistan, — disclosing the names of 22 people responsible for the torture committed in Diyarbakir Prison, 78’ers Initiative is now preparing to have international talks to secure investigation and for the protection of witnesses.
Enabling the conduction of an investigation 30 years later concerning the humanitarian plight witnessed in Diyarbakir prison, 78’ers Initiative is now worried about the life safety of witnessed who explained the names of torturers. Remarking that a humanity crime has been committed in Diyarbakir, the Initiative will have international talks for the securing of the investigation.
The Initiative, enabling the conduction of an investigation against the people who applied torture and ill-treatment on prisoners in Diyarbakir prison between 1980-84, will have first talks with International Criminal Court, the United Nations and many international organizations including Amnesty International.
One more initiative has additionally been launched to enable these witnesses benefit from the rights accorded for the victims of 12 September who were convicted due to the statements they were made to give under torture and cases not related with them. The Initiative, assessing the victims’ motion for new trial, will soon launch a common work with lawyers.
The investigation launched by Diyarbakir Attorney General’s Office has also made unease the prison officials of the term who have been reported to make an application for protection, remarking that they will not have any security of life once their identities become known when the statements of victims are appended to the investigation file. Governor will review the demand after carrying out an evaluation on the applications.
