DIYARBAKIR, Kurdistan, — Kurdish politicians and representatives of NGO’s attending a symposium in Diyarbakir, called Turkish government to convert Diyarbakir E Type Prison to a museum, ANF reported today.
The resolution of the symposium said what happened in Diyarbakir Prison after 1980 coup is a shame on the Turkish Republic and a lot needs to be done to make the new generation remember about the victims.
The symposium set an action plan to start trials agains preparators of the atrocracies in Diyarbakir prison and called the authorities to form a Truth Commission for investigation of post 1980 era.
Thousands of innocent intellectuals were brutally tortured or killed in this prison in Diyarbakir during the post-1980 period simply for expressing their opinions. Some committed suicide to end the torture to which they were subjected.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the old prison will be demolished and a new one will be built. But the Kurdish organizations and opposition parties demands Diyarbakir Prison to be converted to a museum.
