Turkey: Kurdish mayor sentenced to 7 years imprisonment

carcere3SIRNAK, — North Kurdistan, — Turkish Criminal Court sentenced the Mayor of Sirnak, Ramazan Uysal to seven years and one month imprisonment on the account of “acting on behalf of an outlawed organisation without being a member of it” and “disseminating propaganda for an outlawed organisation, reports said today.

Uysal was on trial over his pro-Kurdish speech which he delivered in a protest in Sirnak on 15 February 2010, the anniversary of the international plot against the Kurdish national leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Ocalan was abducted in 1999 in Kenya and handed over to Turkey. The Kurds regard the abduction as an international conspiracy to decimate the Kurdish resistance movement.

While Uysal himself was not present at the court, he was represented by his lawyer. At the end of the trial the Diyarbakir Heavy Criminal Nr. 4 rejected acquittal demands and sentenced Ramazan Uysal to imprisonment.
