Turkey keeps bombing Kurdistan

The Turkish warplanes bombed Kurdish regions in northern Iraq on Wednesday 16th June. The operation started after PKK Kurdish guerrillas attacked a military base in Southeast Turkey, killing at least one soldier.

Before the air raid, Turkish ground forces are reported to have penetrated two to three kilometres into the northern Iraq border. This is a clear violation of international law and the Iraqi sovereignty.

The PKK attacked a military base in Sirnax province in south-eastern Turkey at 1 am on Wednesday. The Turkish General said in a written statement that one soldier has died in the attack, but casualties could be heavier.

In a separate incident a specialized sergeant was killed and a village guard was wounded in the clash with the PKK in the rural Uludere district of Sirnax. At least three soldiers were wounded in the clash, which started late Tuesday and lasted until the early hours Wednesday.

In a separate incident on Tuesday it was reported that another soldier died and three were wounded in a mine blast in the region, the governor of Sirnax announced. The wounded were taken to a military hospital in Sirnax.
