After 134 days of heroic resistance, on Monday Kobanê was entirely expunged of ISIS terrorists as a result of the brave actions of Kurdish guerrilla forces, Women’s Defense Units (YPJ) and People’s Defense Units (YPG). As ISIS terrorists evacuated into neighbouring Turkey, headline news across the world described this as a great victory for the Kurdish people in Rojava (western Kurdistan).
Despite the possibility of severe repression by the Iranian government, Kurds in the city of Merîwan and Sine happily gathered on the streets to celebrate this victory in Rojava. In addition to the four parts of Kurdistan, thousands of Kurds in Europe celebrated this historical victory, with many political parties across Europe congratulating the Kurdish victory.
Free Women Society of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR) also congratulated this victory and affirmed to the people: “In Kobanê, it was not only the Kurdish youth who participated and lost their lives in this historical resistance but also Arab, Persian and Turkish citizens. With Kobane’s defeat of the enemy the many Kudish people were united for the first time; and this was one of the greatest objectives of leader Abdullah Öcalan and what the Kurdish people desired most of all. Finally, because of Kobanê a democratic and free Kurdish nation has begun to emerge. Most importantly, it was women who played the main role and in guiding and advancing the efforts of this victory. The bravery and leadership of the YPJ women against ISIS terrorists has become an international news sensation.”
KJAR reaffirmed that Kobanê has demonstrated that any organisation which is independent, self-reliant and believes in their ideology will never fail.
Free and Democratic Society of East Kurdistan (KODAR) declared: “Kobanê’s victory and the defeat of ISIS was the culmination of intense efforts on the part of the Kurdish nation; an effort which also crushed the objectives of regional and global powers who had planned to reconstruct the Middle East according to their own interests, regardless of the efforts of democratic elements in the Middle East.”
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s political office (PUK) greeted the Peshmerga and Guerrilla fighters and declared that “we call for help from the Patriotic Union and all other countries in the world to support Kobanê as Kobanê’s victory is for the freedom of all. It is important to have international support in rebuilding the city, especially since its rural and urban citizens participated in the defeat of ISIS, which serves as an example of how everyone should fight against terrorism as Kobanê did.”
In this regard, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) stated that “Kobanê was a big step for the self-rule administration in Rojava. It must be a symbol and model for addressing Kurdish efforts towards independence. Kobanê’s victory also helped to find the appropriate method to win Şengal, Kurdistan and Syria.”
The Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK), also in an open dialogue congratulated Kobanê in its victory, which is seen as an epic victory for Middle Eastern people against oppression. PJAK stated that “Kobanê’s aspirations have become reality, a symbol of shared social life which is far removed to current forms of human existence due to their humanity.”
