Osman Mustefapur - News

Prolonged detention of political prisoners has a history in Iran although it has not yet been defined for political prisoners in Iran’s Law.

The government has always tried to issue proceedings for a few minute trails and issuing long terms in jail for political prisoners.

The purpose of these sanctions is to eliminate the memory, breaking the resistance and break the will of the political prisoners.

About 23 years have passed since the conviction of a Kurdish political prisoner in the Iranian prisons, but so far he has been deprived of the facility “prison break”.

Osman Mostefapur is a political activist of the Urmiye Prison, he was arrested in 1991 on charges of collaborating with one of the Kurdish opposition parties and was then sentenced to 25 years imprisonment after several trials. During this time all efforts of Osman and his family have been futile in obtaining parole or furlough the Campaign in Defense of Civil and Political Prisoners reported.

A close relative of Mustefapur said to the campaign: “he was arrested at 18 now he is 43 and should be released, but prison officials said he should stay in jail for 10 more years due to his lost file over the years. Because of the lack of absolute ignorance of the outside world he suffered from depression and mental problems. Osman is not able to embody the image of the town life such as car, city and street”.

Osman Mostefapur, son of Huseyn from the Village of Kase Giran (Piranshahr functions) was captured along with three others friends in the region of Urmiye Tirgewer on the 14th of June 1991. Mohammad Saleh Shahini and Huseyn Sitwit, and two other friends were killed by a shooting from Iranian Revolutionary Guards (Sepah) at the same location.

From the moment of Osman’s arrest, he is placed under the most severe physical and mental tortures, insults and mental harassment in the solitary ward of Sepah and Ettelaat to 6 months. He is delivered to the solitary cell of Urmiye Central Prison on the 8th of June 1992.

On the 25th of June 1992 Mustefapur was sentenced to death along with two others, but it was abrogated in regard with transfer to Tabriz Prison. Eventually he was tried again in 1995 and was convicted to 25 years in custody. Now he is at Urmiye Prison.

According to article 58 of Islamic Penal Code of Iran reformed in 2013 states: “Those who have been sentenced to imprisonment for more 10 years can make use of parole if they have served half of their jail term”.
