Newroz (Kurdish New Year) is considered one of the oldest traditions in the Kurds history. Every year the Kurds (in four sectors occupied by the nation-state of Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey) celebrate the ancient Newroz by lighting fires over the mountains on 21th of March. Newroz for Kurds is a symbol of peace and solidarity also resistance against oppression and inequality.
In Iran and Rojhelat (East Kurdistan) the Islamic regime has militarized Kurdish areas for fear of people gathered together. This year the Iranian government had intended to forbid the celebration of Newroz to excuse the anniversary of the death of one of Shiite religious figures but the Kurdish New Year (2714) held more elegant than the previous year.
According to Firat News Agency, Kurds in the cities of Rojhelat calling Urmiye, Kirmashan, Pawe, Meriwan, Mehabad, Piranshar (Xanê), Bokan, Kamyaran, Ciwanro, Dalaho, Sine and Bane began to dance and lit the Newroz fire by thousands of people.
In Sine (Sanandaj) Newroz festival held widely attended by civil rights activists and the families of those killed in the Kurdish freedom. Newroz fire was lit by the representative of the Mothers for Peace. People were celebrating with traditional Kurdish dress also by carrying the symbols of green, red and yellow.
Kurds in Mehabad celebrate Newroz in Freedom Square of this city with turn fire and music-dance as well.
In this regard, Bane people celebrated Kurdish New Year 2714 in the squares and streets of this city.
Another region of Rojhelat that was held Newroz celebration is Mergewer (Urmiye function). Thousands women and youth gathered in village of Dize around the fire, celebrations and chanted slogans “Long Live Newroz! (Kurdish: Bijî Newroz!)”.
Kurds in Meriwan villages Yengice, Ney and Corune were celebrated Newroz with the excitement and double pleasure. While they’re wearing Kurdish traditional clothing began to dance by singing revolutionary songs.
Piranshar (Xanê) residents gathered in the city mountains and lit a fire to participate in Newroz.
In addition in Bokan, thousands Kurds lit the Newroz ancient fire over the Rash Mountain chanting slogans of freedom.
Also Osmaniye residents in Kirmashan celebrated national Newroz in a special ceremony reading poems and playing the drum and Serena.
In Dalaho and Ciwanro regions, Yarsan Kurds celebrated Newroz in the grave of Pir Benyamin.
