Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan’s brother Mehmet Öcalan spoke to DİHA (Dicle News Agency) about the details of the meeting he had with his brother in İmralı prison yesterday.

His brother said the Kurdish leader said the government must take urgent steps for the democratic solution process which -he reportedly said- cannot advance with one-sided steps. Öcalan also demanded that light be shed immediately on the Lice attack.

Mehmet Öcalan said his brother had complaints of constant inflammation of throat, nose and mouth. Öcalan reportedly said him that he needed to wash his face almost a hundred times a day because of his eye problems that made his eyes burn and stream. He said Öcalan wanted to see an independent delegation of doctors because of his health problems.

Mehmet Öcalan said the government should ensure the visit of an independent delegation to the Kurdish leader in İmralı prison.

The Kurdish leader -his brother said- also commented the Lice attack, saying that “This is not a healthy course. A young person was killed in Lice, and he was shot from the behind, as is known and has been seen by everyone. In addition, ten people were wounded, two of them being critically. This is what happened in Lice, as far as we have monitored it from the media and as is also said by the report prepared by Diyarbakır Medical Chamber. I extend my condolences to the family of Medeni Yıldırım who was shot there and wish those hospitalized a speedy recovery. This is no promising course. The agreed steps need to be put into practice immediately. The government must fulfill its responsibilities concerning the Lice attack and launch an urgent investigation into the attack and shed light on the incident. This is what we expect the government to do”.

Öcalan said the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) leader pointed out that he did the best he could under the circumstances he is being subject to. According to his brother, Öcalan said the families and lawyers of İmralı inmates must exercise their legal right to pay regular visits to the prison.

He quoted the Kurdish leader as saying that “From my point of view, the first stage has been completed by 1 June, although some others say it is continuing. We are about to enter the second stage but without witnessing any remarkable progress. In a few weeks, a delegation of the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) will probably pay a visit to İmralı. We will be discussing and evaluating the same issue during the next meeting with them. The current circumstances need to change if the process is meant to be carried a step forward. This is what the process requires, to have regular meetings with all circles. It cannot make headway if only the BDP delegation is allowed to pay a visit to İmralı only once a month”.

The Kurdish leader reportedly said that not only Kurds but also Turks and all other peoples in Turkey need to undertake responsibility for the process which -he said- cannot make headway without the preparation of a substructure. “It is not possible for someone in my place, who is being held between four walls, can ensure the advancement of the process basing on one-sided steps. Everyone should contribute to the process”, he said.
