Öcalan: It is the government’s turn to make a move

Gezi Park - Taksim

BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş held a press conference in BDP’s Istanbul office after the visit he paid to Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan together with the parliamentary group deputy chair, Pervin Buldan, on Friday. BDP delegation’s last meting with Öcalan in Imralı prison had taken place on 14 February.

Demirtaş quoted the Kurdish leader as saying the followings, “I firstly extend my thanks and greetings to everyone. I continue having talks with the state to ensure that the current process can make a healthy progress. The currently available non-conflict environment has been achieved by means of the efforts I have made and the initiative I have taken until today. I have been doing my best on my behalf to resolve the decades-old Kurdish conflict, it is the government’s turn now. I hope it will also fulfill its responsibilities with the same seriousness.I am myself well aware of my historical responsibilities. My efforts are for more democracy and freedom. I hope my counterparts will seize the opportunity and pursue the same efforts as me”.

The Kurdish leader also saluted the Taksim resistance which -he said- he found meaningful. This stance- he said- has created a political rupture but no one should let himself be used by nationalist and pro-coup circles. The democrat, revolutionary, patriot and progressive circles should not let this movement slide under their surveillance.

Demirtaş called attention to the situation of jailed lawyers for Öcalan and demanded their release so that their meetings with their client in İmralı can continue uninterruptedly from now on.

BDP co-chair criticized the government for intervening in the names to take part in the delegation to İmralı, warning that they will display a different attitude should they once again face an arbitrary treatment from the government’s side. He added that a BDP delegation should pay another visit to İmralı within 15 days”.
