While Western Kurdistan needs urgent humanitarian aid, the authorities of the Kurdistan Regional Government have closed down the borders in an unprecedented move and are installing a border fence.
Western Kurdistan is under siege from the south by Assad´s regime and Syrian opposition fighters, from the north by Turkey and from the East by the Kurdistan Regional Government. Consequently, people are under tremendous economic pressure and in need of humanitarian aid.
Despite all these restrictions, the Kurdistan Regional Government is installing a barrier fence on its border with Western Kurdistan.
According to the Peshmerges based in the area; yesterday Peshmerge forces begun installing barrier fences on the border. They said that they were ordered not to allow any exportation of goods from Southern Kurdistan to Western Kurdistan.
Despite the fact that the KRG promised to re-open the borders in the last meeting of the High Kurdish Council with representatives of the KRG.
Dr. Mehmud Osman, one of the Kurdish MPs in the Iraqi Parliament, harshly criticized the closure of the borders by the KRG and stated; “Even during the brutal repression by Seddam Hussein, Iran and Syria had not closed down the borders to the people of Southern Kurdistan! None of the Kurdish authorities have the right to close the borders to the Kurdish nation”, he said.
