AMED, Kurdish Capital, — The trial of 29 Kurdish children accused of rioting in Amed E Type Closed Prison to protest violation of their rights on December 15, 2009 has taken place today.
The children remarked that they rioted to resist the harassment and physical violence they were experiencing in the prison. Thirty-one child inmates were transferred to prisons in eight different cities after the incident.
The children are being accused of damaging public property and rioting in prison. A defendant, R.A., told that the wardens suddenly came into the ward and took six prisoners including him to cells as V.K. said they were beaten by the wardens in the cell.
The next hearing is reported to take place on 3 April.
It should be noted that the number of Kurdish jailed children is reported from 2,300 to 3000. They had been arrested for taking part in pro-Kurdish demonstration and throwing stones at Turkish police.
