TABRIZ, Iran, — According to our correspondents, Kurdish students of Tabriz University were forbidden from commemorating the catastrophe of Helebce.
A group of Kurdish students had been preparing to commemorate the tragedy of Helebce in Tabriz University. They were proscribed even though such commemorations are carried out in many universities across the country each year.
A member of Kurdish group announced that the University authorities had warningly informed them that such commemorations can only be carried out by Besiji (pro-state militia) students.
Helebce (Halabja, with English spelling) is a Kurdish towns located in south Kurdistan (northeast of Iraq), which was attacked by chemical weapon on 16th March 1988, by the Iraqi former regime. More than 5000 Kurdish civilian lost their lives and several thousands were wounded.
