One million mines in Ilam

minesILAM, East Kurdistan, — During the eight-years war of Iran and Iraq, Kurdistan as the main battle field of conflicting sides, suffered heavily. Thousands of Kurds rendered homeless while thousands lost their lives.

Although 23 years passed since the end of the war, still the Kurdish people suffer from the damaged inflicted upon them. Mines planted by the conflicting sides in Kurdistan do often takes the lives of the civilian Kurds.

Most of the suffering has been inflicted on Ilam province in East of Kurdistan which has 430 kilo metre common border with South of Kurdistan (north Iraq).

According to reliable sources more than one million mines had been planted during the Iraq- Iran war. Yet the Iranian regime has not made the slightest effort to deactivate these mines.

The post-war statistics reveal that more than ten thousands civilians have been the victims of these mines.
