Kurds protest against Election Board decision

newroz2011dDIYARBAKIR, — Thousands of Kurds have taken the streets of Kurdish capital, Diyarbakir today to protest against the decision by the Election Board to strip off Hatip Dicle of his legitimate mandate, not allowing him to enter Turkish parliament.

A march has just started in the city where also the Block deputies have met to decide not to go to parliament.

In the meantime shops did not opened today in many cities as people keep protesting against the decision by the Election Board. Shops in Bağlar, Cizre, Silopi, Nusaybin and Yüksekova did not open.

Today the Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block deputies will meet to discuss the next steps to take to respond to the Board decision. The DTK (Democratic Society Congress) yesterday called on the BDP (Peace and Democracy Party) which made up the largest body of the 36 elected deputies not to enter Parliament.

Labour, Democracy and Freedom Block deputies have ended their meeting in Diyarbakir with the decision not to go to Parliament.

Reading a statement from the group Serafettin Elçi MP for Diyarbakir said that the group “will not go to parliament until the injustice against our people stop. The violence and operations against our people – said Elçi – have continued incessantly. The last straw has been the Election Board decision to quash Hatip Dicle mandate. It is for these reasons that we have taken the decision not to go to Parliament until these injustices and violence would not stop”.
