Death of Kurdish conscript, arrests of artists on Turkey-Syria border

KURDISTAN, — Media Institute of Western Kurdistan Society reports that  Kurdish recruit, Mahmoud Abdullah Mirza, born 1988, from Deyrik was serving  in the Syrian army, in the Kenitra area with 90th Brigade. He had two months service left in the Syrian army. During his leave, while he was with his brother in a park in Dummar on Friday 27 May 2011 he was attacked by a group of about thirty people who aimed to stir up sectarian strife, and they killed him with knives and wounded his brother in the attack.

Defense of Detainees of Opinion Organization in Syria Rawanga reports with great concern that on 24 May 2011 two young Kurds were abducted  by Syrian security forces from the streets of Damascus for no apparent reason:

  • Yilmaz Mohammed Nazir Asad is physically disabled, the father of one child, and the sole breadwinner for his family since his father died. He had been working in Damascus;
  • Nidal Ahmed Mohamed

This is shameful and inappropriate, and follows other arbitrary arrests in the campaign against citizens in Syria. The two young men were traveling in a car in the center of Damascus when they were stopped by intelligence security. There is still no information of their whereabouts and it seems they are being kept in isolation. There is serious concern that these two men may be tortured and perhaps killed in detention

Human Rights Organization in Syria MAF, Kurdish Organization for Defending Human Rights and Public Freedoms in Syria DAD, and Kurdish Committee for Human Rights in Syria al-Rased report that security authorities in Qamshli, arrested people at the crossing point between Qamishli and Nusaybin on Monday 30 May 2011. They are both Kurdish activists:

  • Ahmed Abdullah (also known as Bave Shapal) who was arrested earlier in the uprising in Qamishli in 2004,
  • and singer Shiar Agre

The men had submitted their passports and were then escorted to an unknown destination.

Security agents are in a position to arrest anyone without justification who wants to travel to Turkey over the border.

  • Ahmed Bakr Ali, known as (Arshek Baravi) the Kurdish poet was also arrested and he has been transferred to criminal intelligence security in Damascus after degrading and torturing him. He was then released on bail, after being under arrest for thirteen days.
  • The poet Farhan Jamil Abdul Qadir was arrested on Wednesday 25 May 2011 on the Turkish border. His passport was seized, and his fate remains unknown.

This comes amid heightened security and increased inspection of identity cards on public roads by joint patrols of security services and the military.

Intelligence security has lists of hundreds of protestors whom they are seeking to arrest.
