VAN, North Kurdistan, — The Kurdish activist Sedat Karadag, member of Democratic and Patriotic Youth (DYG) lost one of his eyes after being shot in the head at a military checkpoint in Hakkari on December 10.
Mr. Karadag has been held in prison since December 30th, and he is reported to be in a life-threatening situation.
To protest against his detention and condition in the prison he has started a hunger strike.
Many Kurdish people have launched a demonstration to protest against the Turkish military’s brutality and to support Karadag.
Yesterday, the Kurdish people in Van launched a protest against Karadag’s arrest and his ill-treatment by Turkish officials. But police violently intervened against the demonstrators throwing several gas bombs at them and using pressured waters to disperse the crowd.
Most young protestors refused to put an end to the action and marched to the hospital chanting slogans.
Peace and Democracy Party Deputies took part in the demonstration. Police detained at least 30 demonstrators.
