According to Firat New Agency over two thousand Turkish police officers were taken to court for the disproportionate use of force. Only 2 police officers were sentenced among the 309 who were charged of torturing between 14 February 2005 and 01 June 2010. While 50 police were acquitted, 131 police were found innocent. The judgments of 61 police are in the process.
The report said that out of 2032 police officers taken to court allegedly responsible for torture, only 20 were sentenced. Eight of them were sentenced to imprisonment, while one of them was barred from official duty and eleven others were given pecuniary penalty.
While 170 police were acquitted, prosecution was decided to be unnecessary for 1362 police officers. The cases of 9 police were abated. While the sentence explanations of 19 police were set back, the judgments of 450 police are in the process.
In Turkey, ‘torture and maltreatment’ complaints are increasing day after day and so, it seems, is the impunity of the police.
