Claudia Roth: Turkey goes to EU only through Diyarbakir

Berlin- Germany: Claudia Roth, the chairwoman of the German Green Party stated that if the Kurdish problem is not solved in a peaceful way, Turkey will not be able to join the European Union.

“The way to EU goes through Diyarbakir,” Roth told Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan. Diyarbakir is the capital of Kurdistan.

She said that Kurdish demands in Turkey are fair, confirming her support for Kurdish demands. She hoped that the democracy initiation process in Turkey continues.

“I am very sad for the children who are still kept in jail for throwing stones. I am very sorry for 1500 members of DTP who are behind bars. I am very sorry that Ahmed Turk has been prevented from involvement in politics and for what happened to him in Samsun city where he was attacked by Turkish chauvinists.” Roth said.

“I met with many people in Turkey; most of them don’t like having a militarist law. Turkey needs a new civilian and democratic law. The rights of the minorities must be protected in the Turkish constitution,” she added.
