Two Kurdish citizens, Raouf Sheikh Maroufi and Mohammad Faraji, arrested during the ‘Women, Life, Freedom‘ uprising, have been sentenced to death.
After spending nearly three years in legal limbo at Bukan Central Prison, they were convicted by Branch One of the Mahabad Revolutionary Court on charges of “enmity against God” and “corruption on earth”. They were officially informed of their death sentences on Tuesday, 24 February 2026.
The two young men had previously been held for extended periods in a Ministry of Intelligence detention centre in Urmia, where they were reportedly subjected to intense interrogation and pressure. Their families have also faced threats and security pressure.
Earlier reports had highlighted the legal cases of other Kurdish political activists, including Verisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, who have also received death sentences.
Human rights organisations have repeatedly warned against the use of the death penalty for detainees connected to nationwide protests, calling for these executions to be halted.
