The Supreme Court of Iran has accepted Verisheh Moradi’s appeal and overturned the death sentence issued by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The ruling was annulled due to incomplete investigations and violations of legal procedures during the judicial process, and the case has been returned to Branch 15 for retrial.
According to her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, the Supreme Court emphasised that the charge on which the death sentence was based had not been formally communicated to the defendant during the proceedings — a fundamental breach of due process. Consequently, the previous verdict was dismissed, allowing for a new judicial review.
Ms Moradi, a civil rights activist and member of the Free Women’s Community of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR), was arrested in Sine (Sanandaj) in August 2023 and spent months in solitary confinement under pressure to make forced confessions. She was sentenced to death following two court sessions held in the summer and autumn of 2024.
The case now enters a new phase of judicial examination, and the outcome will be determined in forthcoming sessions of the Revolutionary Court.
