TURKEY, — Despite having signed the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on February 26, 1988, Turkey is still failing to respect that Convention.
On the anniversary of that signature things have not improved. Indeed, as Human Rights Association (IHD) points out, things are worse in certain areas. “In the East and South East of Turkey torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment are still very high and frequent.”
4000 Kurdish villages have been set on fire and emptied, around 5 millions Kurds were forced to migrate, 17,500 people became victims of extrajudicial killings, and around a hundred mass graves are only some of the main figures released by IHD which has published a very detailed report, year by year since 1988.
