The Rojava Revolution: A Model for Democratic Transformation in the Middle East

On the thirteenth anniversary of the Rojava Revolution in Kurdistan and north-eastern Syria, we would like to congratulate all the peoples of the region. This revolution is a beacon of democracy for the whole of the Middle East.

The establishment of democratic self-administration in Rojava and north-eastern Syria saw this model take shape. The 19 July Revolution in Rojava is the outcome of the struggles of all freedom seekers, particularly the fighters from all four parts of Kurdistan, and it has been realised through the blood of thousands of martyrs. We honour and remember the martyrs who paved the way for freedom.

In a Middle East mired in deep crisis, Rojava’s democratic model has proven to be the only viable solution to the region’s problems. It is a model in which all ethnicities and cultures can coexist within a democratic system. This model is founded on women’s freedom and societal empowerment.

As Syria and Rojava enter their most sensitive phase, any political agendas driven by power or destructive foreign interventions based on the elimination of national and cultural diversity would cause irreparable damage.

The ongoing massacres in Syria demonstrate that replacing one dictator with another only exacerbates the crisis. The true solution lies in transforming the system’s nature—moving away from a centralised dictatorship based in the denial towards a system in which all of Syria’s and Rojava’s ethnic and cultural diversities can attain democratic self-administration.

The Rojava Revolution emerged at a time when Syria was caught in the terrifying grip of ISIS and other reactionary forces. Therefore, the establishment of a democratic system based on coexistence and decentralisation in Rojava and north-eastern Syria is of profound significance. This system could serve as a model for democratisation across the Middle East, particularly in Iran. The democratic achievements of this revolution can undoubtedly benefit all peoples in the region, and signs of its influence on democratisation are already visible. The Rojava Revolution provides a blueprint for initiating democratic change and transformation in the Middle East. This approach undoubtedly carries invaluable lessons, particularly for the future of Iran.

On the thirteenth anniversary of this democratic system, which has achieved so much, the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) would like to extend its congratulations to all peoples, especially those of Syria and Rojava Kurdistan. The progress and flourishing of this democratic system depend on the participation of all peoples to preserve this golden chapter in history. May this democratic, decentralised system, which is worthy of all Syrian society and Rojava, continue to enjoy stability, security, and peace as it shapes a new future for all the peoples of Syria.
